Rotterdam is the second largest city of the Netherlands and has a wonderful mix of old and new architecture. Explore the 'Cube Houses', designed by Piet Blom. These 38 yellow houses are shaped as cubes and there are even 2 bigger ones, the 'super cubes'. You can walk around it and underneath it, and if you want to visit a house there is the 'Look-Cube', which gives you the opportunity to see it from inside. Besides the Cube Houses you can cross the famous Erasmus bridge over the Nieuwe Maas river and have a stroll along the river. Across the bridge is 'De Rotterdam Building', an appartment complex that looks like it has been sliced vertically in separate components.
Just a 20 minute drive from Rotterdam you’ll find 'Kinderdijk', a 'UNESCO World Heritage' site with 19 beautiful windmills. The windmills orginate from the 17th century and drain the water from the 'Alblasserwaard' into the river 'Lek' and the sea. Nowhere else in the world will you find a water management system (what the Dutch are famous for) like this at one location. Kinderdijk has free entrance for walking, you can also take a boat ride here or visit the two windmill museums.
