The waterside cities Enkhuizen and Hoorn have a rich cultural history and were important trade ports for the Dutch East India Company during the 17th century.
The cities flourished during the Dutch Golden Age and if you visit nowadays you can still see the wealth and influence in the form of beautiful achicture, well preserved monumental buildings and museums.
Visit the old town of Enkhuizen which faces the water and has a popular marina, old churches and remains of the former city walls. You can also visit the open air museum 'Zuiderzee Museum' where you can learn more about the history of the area.
In Hoorn you can visit the Westfries Museum which showcases everything about the Dutch Golden Age and has an impressive replica of an orignal VOC ship. In the center of Hoorn you can still see the architectural legacy of the Dutch East India Company.
